about

I had been listening to a lot of Patato y Totico when I wrote this song. As I often do, I initially sketched the percussion part out playing the parts myself and then played them for Luis Conte. Of course I had the clave backwards! But he told me what I wanted was a guaguanco and he said if I wanted the real deal we should call Orestes Vilato and have him come down from San Francisco to play with Luis. Which we did. What a blast! Later on Luis sang background vocals, continuing to the tradition we started on my There Were Signs album, which had been I believe the first time Luis sang on a commercial recording.

I have always enjoyed the humor of the lyric, delivered in such a matter-of-fact manner.

lyrics

the phase of the moon is new
and all the women are fully adorned
today be happy
and place an offering by your door
the sky above your head is blue
but if you stumble you could fall
when trouble surrounds you
never put down your horn

when the rains have come and gone
and the liquor has been made from your share of the corn
give thanks for everything
and place an offering by your door
but when the beast is in its den
if you’re the one they choose to draw him out
on this night be hopeful
never put down your horn
