about

In 1987 I spent a number of weeks in Africa, and wound up in Senegal. I carried along a bag of colorful American t-shirts as I had heard they could be used for bartering. One day I went to the market looking for drums and traded the t-shirts plus some cash for three sabar drums of different sizes. Because they were so big, I had to stuff my clothes into them for the plane ride back, which turned them all yellow. Luis Conte played those sabar on this track. Steve Rodby loved the way Luis grooved on this song and afterwards told Pat Metheny about him, which led to Luis joining the Pat Metheny Group for part of their next tour.

lyrics

hot star
you read about
shine on me
or do without
we all seem to need some miracle
or we can’t face the day
I’m making you the center of my universe
I’ll look at you that way

new guru
like a perfect flower
there’s a genius born
nearly every hour
with the power to keep believing
and to keep the world at bay
I’m making you the center of my universe
I’m making you that way

this poem
like a gypsy’s heart
makes love to you
but is still naïve
it only hopes to be meaningful
beyond what words can say
I’m making you the center of my universe
and I’ll look at you that way
